Online shopping has transformed the way we interact with the world. From paying in online shops and sending money to relatives to managing subscriptions, these transactions have become an essential part of our daily routine. But with convenience also comes risk, and protecting our transactions has never been more crucial.
PayPal, one of the most widely used payment methods globally, facilitates fast and secure transactions by allowing credit cards and bank accounts to be linked. However, cybercriminals are constantly looking for innovative ways to breach users’ security.
To reinforce the protection of your online transactions and purchases, you can add an additional layer of security with TOTP (Time-Based One-Time Password) codes. These temporary codes offer tighter control over who accesses your accounts. Tools such as Latch allow you to implement this measure in a simple way, protecting the services and functionalities that matter most to you, such as online shopping.
What are TOTP codes?
TOTP codes are time-based one-time passwords. They expire after a certain period of time, generally between 15 and 50 seconds. Once this time has elapsed, the algorithm re-creates a new random code, reducing the risk of unauthorised use. This leaves very little room for manoeuvre for cybercriminals because there are no more static passwords, which, however secure, are easier to detect. Enabling the second authentication factor is especially important in apps such as Paypal, where money and financial data are handled. This not only prevents unauthorised access, but also offers peace of mind in transactions.
TOTP codes, as opposed to HOTP (HMAC-based One-Time Password), are codes that have a limited validity in time; they are used in apps that offer a second factor of authorisation and authentication such as Latch. It is a service of Telefónica Innovación Digital which acts with authorisation controls offering an additional layer of protection for online accounts and services.

Why use TOTP codes to protect your PayPal account?
The Latch app acts as a second authentication factor, providing greater control over who accesses your Paypal account. With Latch, you can easily block or unblock access to your account in real time through the application. This means that, even if someone gets hold of your password, they won’t be able to log into your account without your permission.
In addition, if someone tries to access your profile without your permission, you will receive an immediate notification in the Latch app. This way, you can keep your PayPal account protected against unauthorised access attempts or data theft, improving the security of your online transactions.
How to protect your PayPal account with TU Latch?
You already know the benefits of integrating Latch with PayPal, but there’s more: it’s very easy to set up! You don’t need to be a technology expert to protect your account. With a few simple steps, you can add an extra layer of security without hassle.
The first thing you need to do is download the Latch app, available at Google Play and in the App Store.
Then, from the browser (as it is not possible to do it from the PayPal app), go to your PayPal account settings. Click on the “Settings” icon next to “Log out”.
At the top of the page, select “Security Centre“.
Click on “Set Up” to the right of “2-Step Verification“.
On the next screen, select “Use an authentication application” and click “Set it up“. A QR code will be generated.
Open the Latch app, log in with your username and password, and go to the “Log in” section. Click on “Add account” and scan the QR code or enter the alphanumeric code displayed by PayPal.
That’s how easy it is to strengthen the security of your PayPal account using Latch. Using second factor authentication through TOPP codes is one of the best ways to protect your access, not only on PayPal but also on other services such as social networks. Whether you run an online business or are a user looking to make purchases with peace of mind, Latch is the ideal tool to ensure a secure and reliable experience.
