How to protect your business from quantum threats with TU Quantum Encryption

TU Quantum Encryption
You’ve probably heard about quantum computing in the last few months, it’s certainly one of the most important technological milestones, but exactly what is it used for? This new technology will bring a revolution in many industries. For example, imagine being able to simulate molecules to discover new drugs faster, or find optimal solutions to global logistics problems – sounds great, doesn’t it?
However, it also brings challenges and threats from today. Are you familiar with the store-now-decrypt-later (SNDL) threat? This threat is about cybercriminals capturing encrypted data today with the aim of decrypting it in the future when the first quantum computer capable of breaking today’s encryption arrives. This threat puts any company with long-term sensitive data at risk as they may be vulnerable when quantum computers are able to crack the encryption processes, thus exposing the data.
It sounds like science fiction, but this world is much closer than it seems and now is the time to protect yourself. It is essential that companies are aware of the importance of protecting themselves as soon as possible to avoid major problems in the future.  For this reason, at TU, we are already developing solutions for a safer present and future, and in this post we tell you all about what we are already developing with Quantum-Safe technology.

TU Quantum Encryption: a Quantum-Safe Security Solution

To deal with these threats and quantum attacks, Telefónica is evolving its networks to reinforce them with Quantum-Safe technology. This reinforces its commitment to innovation in security and technology by combining current encryption with secure encryption.
Imagine that your company has a safe where it keeps valuable information, such as customer data, secret projects or financial information. Well, while that safe is fully protected today, it could be vulnerable to future technologies and to threats that we are already experiencing today, such as store-now-decrypt-later. And precisely what we achieve with Quantum Encryption is to add an extra layer of protection to secure your safe against the challenges of today and tomorrow.
This innovative solution is responsible for protecting corporate communications and data against the current threat explained above. Quantum Encryption integrates a technology that combines classical cryptography and post-quantum cryptography, implementing post-quantum algorithms standardised by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and ensuring adaptation to any evolution of standards and quantum computing with crypto-agility, transparently to the client.
This solution is very easy to integrate, allowing companies to focus on their business while efficiently protecting their critical information.

Subsea Mechatronics and XRF

Quantum computing is a breakthrough and Telefónica has already taken its first steps with this new technology in collaboration with Subsea Mechatronics and XRF. As discussed above, 5G Quantum-Safe private networks can be set up wherever the customer needs them, even in the middle of the sea.
In this case, the connection between an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) submarine and XRF’s real-time control platform is protected with post-quantum encryption. This control is done with Virtual Reality glasses, which allows the operator to visualise all kinds of data while controlling the vehicle.
By integrating Quantum Encryption over the private 5G network, in this case, we facilitate even more secure and efficient transmission of sensitive data between Subsea Mechatronic’s ROV and XRF’s control platform.
(H3) Halotech, Quside and Kite
It is also possible to integrate Quantum Encryption over IoT device connectivity platforms. This is the case that we have developed together with Halotech, Quside and Telefónica Tech, in which we strengthen the protection of communication between Halotech devices.
These devices, such as armbands and helmets, are used in critical sectors such as mining, healthcare and industry for special operations and transmit sensitive parameters and data of the wearer. We integrate post-quantum encryption made within-house technology, Quantum Encryption with Quside’s quantum random number, on the communication of these devices, through Telefónica Tech’s Kite platform. This makes data transmission between the helmets and bracelets and their Halotech AI control platform even more secure.
