One of the biggest concerns for businesses and organisations in the digital age is cyber-attacks. One word suffices to describe its impact: chaos. In a matter of seconds, these attacks can paralyse systems, compromise sensitive information and cause millions in losses, as well as undermine user confidence, an important factor in the digital world. This is an evil that affects both public and private bodies; no entity is exempt from risk.
Cybersecurity, beyond traditional defensive barriers, requires constant innovation, advanced technology and effective solutions. In this context, protecting every access, transaction or exchange of information is not just a technical measure, but a commitment to privacy and trust. Tools such as the security plugins based on the TU Latch API offer innovative solutions that protect the digital services of businesses and users. Here we tell you about some of the top ideas that have been implemented at TU Latch to create new security solutions.

Inspiration for creating TU Latch security plugins

Latch is an authorisation control platform that adds an extra layer of security to digital services. Just as cybercriminals attack different sectors, Latch focuses on the aim of strengthening security in those sectors. It adapts to every environment and need, integrating seamlessly into various configurations and offering innovative solutions that combine ease of use with advanced technological quality.
As part of this innovation at Telefónica Innovación Digital, we have organised the Hack Your Innovation Contest for the most daring devs to create new hacks for using Latch. This is not the first competition we have organised; in 2015 we launched one that was very successful. Here is a list of the ideas from the winners of the Latch Plugins Contest 2015 who won a financial prize and the recognition of Chema Alonso:
  • First prize to Twlatch (Twitter + Latch): Daniel Crespo was awarded USD 5,000 for his innovative proposal to integrate a Latch into Twitter (now X) through a platform-specific application. Their system does not directly block access, but enables automatic deletion of new tweets as soon as the Latch block is activated. This tool marked an important step towards secure interaction with a platform as important as Twitter, without resorting to alternative methods or “hacks”

  • Second prize was awarded to Go: Mikel Pintor won USD 2,000 for his development that allows Latch to be used through the Go language, creating a practical tool to manage Latch from the command line in any system. This solution facilitates its integration into scripts and programs, as well as generating an SDK designed in Go as an additional output. With this development, the use of Latch in different environments and platforms is simplified through commands, together with the implementation of a new SDK in another key language.
  • Third prize to MetaLatch: Jorge García Bueno was awarded USD 1,000 for an innovative “meta Latch” development that enables latches to operate only within a defined physical area, using Bluetooth connectivity. Within this proximity area, latches can be automatically locked or unlocked by means of a token carried by the user. This project stands out for offering an additional layer of security that, although not perfect, introduces practical and useful solutions for the everyday use of Latch technology, making its implementation even more accessible and efficient

Submit your idea to the Hack Your Innovation Contest

At Telefónica Digital Innovation we are committed to driving innovation and the creation of technology to continue planning the future. A future in which both businesses and users can enjoy a secure and reliable digital environment. The solutions that protected systems in the past need to renew and evolve to meet today’s challenges, and this is where the creativity of today’s devs comes into play.
That’s why we have launched the Hack Your Innovation Contest, a competition aimed at developers with the aim of creating new security solutions based on Latch. This initiative is an ideal platform for innovative minds to come up with technology hacks that redefine the protection of digital services and address emerging threats. There are five €1,000 prizes and a chance to surprise real hackers such as Chema Alonso, Brais Moure, Nerea Luis Mingueza, Miguel Ángel Durán and Carmen Ansío. In the resources section of the website you will find key content on topics such as APIs, plugins, HTTP and much more to inspire you.
Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the change and contribute to the future of digital security. Registration is now closed and hacks can be submitted until 10 January. Don’t let Christmas meals slow you down: get going!
